We, the Undersigned, Merchants of Hong Kong, do ourselves the honour of addressing you to express our cordial thanks for the prompt & decisive measures adopted for the extirpation of Pirates in these waters, & for the protection thereby afforded to British Commerce.
We would at the same time avail ourselves of this opportunity of expressing our admiration of the zeal and gallantry displayed by Capt. Hay of 4th Brigade Columbine » previous to G: Ellis's arrival, as well as of that of Capt. Willcox of 4th Steamer "Fury" despatched afterward by your orders & under your aid on the recent occasion when by skill & perseverance of those Officers a formidable fleet of 30 strongly armed piratical vessels and their dockyard at a great distance from this Colony were totally destroyed. We would be wanting to ourselves were we to fail to express our thanks for a service so important. We sincerely trust
